Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo (GMA) became the 14th president of the Philippines on 20 January 2001. A combination of mass demonstrations (led by POs and NGOs), the defection of the police-military hierarchy, and opposition politicians led to the replacement of Joseph Estrada by Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. GMA promised to fight poverty, work for peace in Mindanao, reform the Philippine political system and revive the economy, among others. She also announced that her administration will be transparent.
In this section, we will post (mostly) PO and NGO statements, analyses, etc. on the GMA administration.
We also have links to background materials on GMA and her government.
